Hygge (hoo-gah) is the Danish art of celebrating the everyday and creating well-being, connection, and warmth and a feeling of belonging. Inviting hygge into my life has been a great way to take care of myself this winter and fight off the seasonal blues. It’s a nice, welcome change from being busy with work all day.
If you’re like me and as soon as the leaves start falling off the trees, you’re slapped in the face with the blues, hygge might be a perfect way to embrace the change in season. Hygge is about enjoying the simple things in life and making your home cozy and inviting. It will also help you strengthen relationships and help you relax.
Before hygge, if given the chance, I would have chosen to hibernate through the colder seasons. However, now I actually look forward to the fall and winter!
How To Implement Hygge In Your Life
Let’s start with cozying up your home! Hang some cute lights, decorate with soft furnishing (lots of cushions and blankets), get some lovely candles.
Then put on comfy clothes. Your favorite sweater and some nice warm socks. Make yourself a nice hot drink (or pour yourself a glass of your favorite wine), snuggle up under a blanket on the couch and watch your favorite movie. Or pick up a good book. Or have a conversation or play an awesome board game with a loved one.
Leave your phone alone for the night. This was one of the biggest challenges for me as I love connecting with people on Twitter and Instagram all day every day. I promise you the world doesn’t end when you don’t check your phone for a night. I tried. Nothing happened. 😉
You can also go for a nice walk outside and just be alone with your thoughts for a while. When I do this, I usually have new inspiration for my stories or I figure things out that have been keeping me busy for a while. Plus, going on walks is really good for you. They are known to reduce stress and couldn’t we all use that?
Strengthen Your Relationships
I also found hygge to be a great way to strengthen my relationships. It helped me prioritize spending quality time with my friends and family.
Host a dinner for friends, play a game with your family or talk all night with your significant other. We sometimes take the wonderful people in our life for granted. Hygge has helped me become more aware and increased my appreciation for the moments I have with loved ones. Now we purposely create new wonderful memories and consciously make time for each other.
If you get the seasonal blues too, I hope this post inspired you to give Hygge a chance. Hopefully, it will be as much of a positive change in your life as it was in mine.
